Itinerary
Day One – Depart Windhoek
We depart from Namibia’s capital, Windhoek and make our way to the Etosha National Park. On our way we pass by many small and historical cities, such as Okahandja, the former tribal centre of the Hereros, as well as Otjiwaongo and Outjo.
During our first game drive in the afternoon our eyes start adjusting to spot game in the bush and in the distance. Etosha is home to many antelopes, a vast bird world, a variety of wild cats, as well as elephants and hippos. Patience, coincidence and a bit of luck shape our experience. Our accommodation is a comfortable lodge outside of the park. [D]
Day Two
After a hearty breakfast we take a game drive into the park in your touring vehicle. The Etosha National Park is one of the oldest game reserves in the world. Already in 1907 the area was put under nature conservation and still today covers 22.270 km ², consisting mostly of grass and bush savannah. There are excellent opportunities for game viewing, at the many water holes or in the open field. The actual Etosha pan, after which the park has been named, is about 6,000 km ² in size. The name “Etosha” comes from the Ovambo and means “place of dry water” or “big white place”. Here it may be that mirages deceive us. But in the rainy months, it could really be water. With many great impressions we leave the park again in the late afternoon. [BD]
Day Three
Today we have another opportunity to observe the many wild animals and to listen to them, how they walk, how they eat, browse, drink and even play. With a bit of luck, we may even see nocturnal animals beating around the bushes. Depending on the season, the smells of the plants and soil in the park are striking. Today we cross the park with the aim of visiting some of the new waterholes and taking in the seemingly-endless landscapes. Exiting the park on the east, we spend our night in a wonderful accommodation outside the park. [BD]
Day Four
Our destination today is a game farm. On-route we stop in the garden city Tsumeb and visit a mining museum that gives us a good insight into the Namibian History, Mining History and the native population. In the afternoon we reach a privately-owned game farm and enjoy a game drive across the farm. Here, too, we could encounter many different types of game, maybe even some that we have not seen yet, such as sable antelopes and waterbucks. Great new impressions and landscapes engrain themselves into our minds today. [BD]
Day Five
After a few eventful days we return to Windhoek, where we arrive in the late afternoon. [B]
