Adventures in southern Africa
Home of ancient civilizations and birth- place of the recently discovered golden rhino-statue which lay undisturbed in a royal grave when Mapungubwe was abandoned by its king and people around the 1300's. It is thought the kingdom collapsed due to climatic change, a spectre facing modern mankind today. Join us as we delve into the history of this beautiful area with another one of our adventures in southern Africa.
Day 1: Arrive at Oliver Tambo International Airport, met by African Outposts and transfer to the Falstaff Inn for an overnight stay.(DB)
Day 2: After breakfast we depart northwards into open country. Within a few hours we are in the bushveld, passing scattered giant baobab trees on our way to Mapungubwe Park. Here we will visit Mapungubwe Hill, where the ancient king lived in seclusion from his people. This kingdom (1300s) was the forerunner of the Zimbabwe civilization and was the first kingdom in southern Africa and derived its power from control of trade to the Indian Ocean. Overnight in a comfortable lodge. (BD)
Day 3: Take a morning game drive in Mapungubwe. Spend the afternoon joining researchers in Venetia-Umldo reserve for some radio tracking of wild dog. Overnight at your lodge (BD)
Day 4: We depart this exciting area and drive parallel to the Limpopo River as we head east to the northern Kruger National Park, an area seldom visited by tourists, and check into Punda Maria rest camp (bd).
Day 5: A full day is spent exploring this fascinating area. We stop at ‘Crooks Corner’ where the park joins the borders of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. ‘Crooks Corner’ owes its name to the colourful characters who gathered there to keep one step ahead of the law in all three countries. We also visit Thulamela, an archaeological treasure chest, while viewing the magnificent flora and fauna in the area. Overnight at Punda Maria (BD).
Day 6: We head south in the park viewing game en-route to Letaba Rest Camp, where we stroll through the Elephant Museum Overnight at Letaba (BD).
Day 7: Depart the Kruger Park via the Blyde River Canyon Route and return to Johannesburg, where your tour ends. (b)
