North West

Pilanesberg-National-Park

Adventure Heaven!

From untamed bushveld to the sophistication of 5-Star resorts, this province provides the complete package, with breath taking scenic beauty, rolling fields of maize, golden sunflowers and vast plains of African bushveld. Enjoy superb game parks – home to the Big-5, magnificent golf courses, water features and sporting facilities.
The province boasts several national parks, the largest being Pilanesberg Game Reserve, located in the crater of an extinct volcano.

Experiences

Adrenalin Rush – Ziplining
Ride the PRONUTRO ZIP 2000, the longest zip slide in the world at 280 meters high and 2 kilometres long, reaches a speed of 140 kilometres per hour. The start of the zip slide is on the top of a hill, 5-minutes from Sun City.

Air Adventures – The Sky is the Limit
Enjoy a wrap-around panorama and the magic of lazily drifting with the wind, in a basket, with magnificent sights over the beautiful Magalies River Valley, Hartbeespoort Dam, Magaliesberg Mountain Range and the Pilanesberg National Park.

Best in Birding
For exciting and rare bird viewing opportunities, visit the numerous birding venues, albeit on foot, in a hide or canoe. Experience both the variety of typically African birds, migrants and endemics, or those found only in South Africa.

The Magaliesburg Canopy Tour
The tour consists of about a kilometre long “foefie” slide divided up into separate slides of varying lengths. Slides are joined together by platforms built high on the cliff faces of the 2500 year old Magaliesberg mountain range. Slides of up to 140m long provide unforgettable rides and spectacular views.

Game Viewing
Hectares of national parks, nature reserves and game farms stretch across the province. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the opportunities offered for self-drive game viewing, guided game drives, guided wilderness hiking trails, game viewing on horseback or from a hot air balloon.

Gaming
The extravagant Sun City, an icon of family fun and entertainment.

Hiking
Many wonderful, scenic hiking trails are available.

Hunting
For an ultimate bush experience, the North West offers an unforgettable hunting safari. Hunters have an in-depth knowledge of the bush and can offer you a unique experience not easily to be found anywhere else.

Taung Heritage Site
The Place of the Lion’ named after Tau, the chief of the Bataung people, who made his headquarters here during the 18th century. Taung became famous in 1924 with the discovery of a fossilised skull of a child. This discovery led many scientists to believe that the origin of early man was initiated on the African continent. Clear water flows through a succession of attractive pools in this ancient valley. Magnificent scenery, Blue Pools, limestone cliffs and picturesque caves provide an ideal spot for hiking and abseiling.

Vredefort Dome
Created by a massive meteorite which struck the earth about 3,000 million years ago. The structure is currently regarded the biggest and oldest, clearly visible impact structure on Earth. It just beats the Sudbury impact structure in Canada for this ranking. Today, the Conservancy is one of the province’s prime adventure tourism sites and caters for the needs of campers, hikers, cyclists, rock climbers, canoeists and white-water rafters.

Rock Climbing
The cliffs are big, wild, often remote and still being discovered. The North West offers some of the best, and most diverse, rock climbing in the world.

Water Sports
A multitude of perfect spots for an adventure getaway, with ample opportunity for windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, jet skiing, skiing, white water rafting, canoeing or body-boarding.

Hartbeespoort Dam
For the explorer seeking some exhilaration, this region offers activities such as parasailing, windsurfing, water and jet skiing, paragliding, hang-gliding or hot air ballooning. Pay a visit to the local aquarium, private zoo, snake park and cable way, or simply indulge in the sheer scenic beauty.

Madikwe Game Reserve
This Malaria-free Reserve is situated a mere three hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, renowned as one of South Africa’s premier safari destinations. Home to 66 large mammal species, including the Big-5, Madikwe is one of the largest of its kind in the country.
